OAK PARK RUNNERS UP TO THE TASK; EAGLES SET TO MEET ELITE AT STANFORD INVITATIONAL THIS WEEKEND.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

Oak Park High boys' cross country coach Kevin Smith did not make things easy for the Eagles when he drew up the 1999 schedule.

Oak Park, however, has been up to the challenge against the area's best in the Ojai and Oak Park invitationals. Now the Eagles will take on the state's elite in the Stanford Invitational in·vi·ta·tion·al

The following week, Oak Park will have another stern test in the Clovis Invitational in Fresno on the state championship course at Woodward Park Woodward Park (34 acres) is a public park, botanical garden, and arboretum located between 21st Street and 24th Street, Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA. At Stanford, Oak Park, ranked sixth in the state, will face a field which includes six of the state's top-10 teams, including top-ranked Central Valley of Shasta Lake For the city, see .

. Today, the two-time defending Tri-Valley League champions competed at Fillmore in the first of three league meets.

``We're definitely ahead of schedule, but it has been an inspiration to help us move to the next level,'' Smith said. ``We'll know a lot more after the next two meets.''

Oak Park, led by junior Mark Nevers, has already gained notice in the Southern Section, jumping to the No. 1 spot in the latest Division IV rankings after impressive performances to start the season.

In the small-schools race of the Ojai invitational, Nevers ran 15 minutes, 26 seconds for the eighth-fastest mark of the 3-mile Lake Casitas Lake Casitas is a lake in Ventura County, California. Senior Erik Wackendstedt was third with junior Ben Saxey, senior Mike Balacian and sophomore Chase Ferrell all among the top 22.

The Ojai meet was nonscoring, but Oak Park would have beaten defending-state-champion Nordhoff in both dual- and invitational-meet scoring.

The Eagles followed their performance at Ojai with a 31-41 triumph over Agoura, the state's top team in Division II, with a 1-2-3 sweep by Nevers, Wackenstedt and Saxey.

``(Nevers) has moved into a new area but the same can be said about each member of the team,'' Smith said. ``It's been quite staggering.''

Equal rights: The Oak Park boys' performances have overshadowed the girls' team. But the Eagles are in good position to defend their Tri-Valley League title with sophomore Kersten Edwards and junior Kim Bryan, who have led Oak Park to eighth in the Southern Section Division IV rankings.

Mutual respect: In anticipation of a competitive Tri-Valley League meet, the school's athletic directors agreed to move the first league meet from Thursday to today to allow the schools an extra day of recovery in order to prepare for the Stanford Invitational.

Family affair: Viewpoint junior Tom Kubler, who won three races in five days last week, added another victory in the Division V race of the Bell-Jeff Invitational at Griffith Park Griffith Park is a large public park at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains. Kubler's twin, Robert, who attends Crespi, is also enjoying success, placing second in the Division IV race at Bell-Jeff and fifth in the small-schools race at the Ojai Invitational. Tom and Robert's sister, Kathy, runs on the Viewpoint girls' team.

Team harmony: Listen closely at meets and you might hear the Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964.
