Sometime within the next month - or maybe it's the next year - Oak Park's own ZIP code zip code

That means this unincorporated community of 15,000 residents could have its own listing next month, although it may have to wait until January or July 1999.

``There are many internal and external address databases and systems that have to be updated prior to use,'' writes Nicholas Barranca bar·ran·ca   also bar·ran·co

, vice president of postal operations, in a letter to U.S. Rep. Brad Sherman, the Woodland Hills Democrat who has been pressuring the Postal Service for a new listing for more than a year.

However, Barranca did not appear very optimistic that the matter will be resolved next month.

``There is a chance that we get it done in July,'' he said. ``It's more likely that it gets done in early or mid-1999.''

During the first year of implementation, either the new 91377 ZIP code or the existing 91301 code - which Oak Park shares with Agoura Hills - will work.

``Think of all the people in Oak Park who have an Aunt Molly who will use the same ZIP code to get a Christmas card delivered that she did last Christmas,'' Sherman said.

Ventura County residents pay a 7.25 percent sales tax while Los Angeles County residents pay 8.25 percent.

Oak Park residents also no longer will be inconvenienced by having their 911 emergency calls routed to police and fire departments in Los Angeles County, or by being called for jury duty in that county.

Sherman and his six predecessors have been trying for decades to cut through the Postal Service's bureaucracy to get a separate listing for Oak Park.

``I don't view this as any kind of contest with my predecessors,'' he said. ``But I've been working on this for a year and a half. I know how important this is to the people of Oak Park. And we got it.''
