Commented Duncan Alexander, Managing Director Business Development at OAG:

"Airlines have made great strides in streamlining the check-in process, with self-service and e-ticketing now commonplace. It is ironic, then, that this drive for efficiency has created an infrastructure that may have contributed to the congestion problems yesterday and today.

"Check-in booths have been removed to make way for self-service terminals and e-ticketing is now commonplace. Yet there were banks of redundant self-service terminals with queues of people trying to check-in at far fewer manned booths than, say, a year ago.

"At this stage, of course, we don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

how long the ban on hand luggage will continue; but it is a risk that the very efficiencies put in place to benefit the traveler have the potential to drive people away from flying.

"Unfortunately, there is no guarantee such security alerts won't happen again and airlines need to adapt their customer communication strategies.
