O'Melveny & Myers remains atop The List of law firms, as ranked by the number of attorneys in L.A. County, despite the fact that its local offices' head count decreased by 43 lawyers over the last year. Joseph Ryan, managing partner of L.A.-based O'Melveny, said the firm did not lay off any attorneys in the past year, but did move some from L.A. to its offices in New York New York, state, United States New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. "We are going to try to hire a considerable number (of attorneys)," he said. "We are very short-handed, especially in the mid-range associate levels." The firm would like to hire as many as 10 to 20 new associates, Ryan said. But he added that he doubts hiring will hit that level because the firm may not be able to find that many lawyers who meet its standards. In general, the firm does not hire "laterally," meaning it doesn't hire associates from other firms, Ryan explained. And it will only hire law school graduates who place in the top 10 percent of their class, he said. It currently employs 117 law school students as summer associates and may be making offers to some of them in the future, Woodhouse said. The summer associates program this year is the second largest in the firm's history, he added. Last year, it employed 73 summer associates, he noted. He said he was optimistic op·ti·mist n. 1.
