O'KEEFES, CITY SETTLE OTHERS STILL SUED IN STUDENT'S SLAYING AT PARK AND RIDE LOT.Byline: Karen Maeshiro Staff Writer PALMDALE - The parents of a young woman shot to death at a Park and Ride lot in Palmdale in 2000 have settled with city government for an undisclosed sum in a lawsuit over the death. Family attorney R. Rex Parris said the parents will receive a ``significant amount'' of money from city government but he is not allowed to disclose a figure under confidential settlement terms. Other defendants in the case are still being sued. ``I can tell you both parties are unhappy. With the O'Keefes, it doesn't matter how much they get. They lost their daughter. This case was never about money; nor is it about money as we continue. It's about responsibility.'' Parris said city officials ``agreed to use their best efforts'' toward installing video surveillance at the Park and Ride lot, ``but they have to look into privacy issues before they can do it.'' The attorney for city government, Craig Dunkin, said earlier that the case was settled but that he couldn't divulge the terms. ``Part of the agreement is that it's confidential,'' Dunkin said. Michelle O'Keefe's killer has never been identified, although her parents' original lawsuit said the lot's security guard was considered a suspect. The guard told investigators he was in another part of the lot when he heard gunfire but did not see who shot O'Keefe. Prosecutors said Thursday the criminal case was still being reviewed and no one has been charged in O'Keefe's slaying. A hearing will be held Feb. 8 to approve the settlement with the city. Trial is scheduled to begin in April on the remaining defendants in the lawsuit: the former security guard and the security company, which has since filed for bankruptcy bankruptcy, in law, settlement of the liabilities of a person or organization wholly or partially unable to meet financial obligations.
