Nursing at Wairoa Hospital proves life-changing.I WOULD like to thank a group of nurses who strive always to deliver the best care possible in the little east coast town of Wairoa. I am a registered nurse normally based in Hastings Hospital's assessment, treatment and rehabilitation rehabilitation: see physical therapy. unit. Due to staff shortages, I recently had the privilege of working in Wairoa Hospital's acute ward. Although I only worked two afternoon shifts, it was enough to change my way of nursing, for, during that brief time, I gained a wealth of knowledge and experience that will remain with me always. From the moment I began my duties, emergencies occurred, in a nursing field I had not previously experienced. While some of us at some stage in our lives are afraid to step out of our "safety zones", I look forward to the next time. An Indian man arrived on the ward, semi-conscious with a severed sev·er v. sev·ered, sev·er·ing, sev·ers v.tr. 1. To set or keep apart; divide or separate. 2. All staff deserve "a pat on the back" for their uncomplaining, excellent professional practice, delivered with confidence, good patient judgement, cultural awareness, quality health and team work. Time was never an issue for these nurses and their duties were not completed until they were satisfied they had given 100 percent to their profession. The nurses provided excellent care for their community that ensured standards remained high. I would also like to thank team leader at Wairoa Hospital, Linda Mayo, who facilitated this experience. I only hope this wonderful hospital always remains. Patricia Wright For the actress of the same name, see .
