Nuera Communications Inc. and Ascom Timeplex Inc. Monday announced the signing of an agreement between the two companies to integrate the latest Nuera voice compression and related technology into Ascom Timeplex's Synchrony product line, a family of hybrid circuit, frame relay and cell switches.

According to Ascom Timeplex's assistant vice president of marketing, Robert McGuire, this agreement extends a successful, long-term relationship between the two companies.

"Our previous agreement with Nuera covered voice modules and software to deliver code excited linear prediction Code Excited Linear Prediction (CELP) is a speech coding algorithm originally proposed by M.R. Schroeder and B.S. Atal in 1985. At the time, it provided significantly better quality than existing low bit-rate algorithms, such as RELP and LPC vocoders (e.g. FS-1015).  (CELP (Code Excited Linear Predictive) A speech compression method that achieves high compression ratios along with toll quality audio. LD-CELP (Low-Delay CELP) provides near toll quality audio by using a smaller sample size that is processed faster, resulting in ) and adaptive transform coding (ATC) voice compression at 5.3 to 32 kbps and has been quite effective in establishing Ascom Timeplex as the quality leader in voice compression among backbone T1/T3 vendors; it has given our products more appeal in bandwidth-limited applications.

"By combining these leading-edge voice compression algorithms with Synchrony's advanced PBX networking capabilities, organizations that run private or hybrid voice networks, such as in the financial services, manufacturing and customer services industries, benefit from reduced transmission costs per voice call.

"With the new Enhanced-CELP (E-CELP) algorithms as well as Nuera's implementation of International Telecommunications Union See ITU.

(body, standard) International Telecommunications Union - (ITU) ITU-T, the telecommunication standardisation sector of ITU, is responsible for making technical recommendations about telephone and data (including fax) communications systems for PTTs and suppliers.
(ITU) standards, Ascom Timeplex will continue to deliver the industry's most advanced and highest-quality voice solutions across all our backbone and access platforms," he said.

The officer of a firm responsible for day-to-day management, usually the president or an executive vice-president.
Bill Ingram noted that the agreement highlights Nuera's commitment to Ascom Timeplex and to Nuera's OEM business in general, adding: "The agreement between our companies will integrate the industry's latest and best voice compression solutions into Ascom Timeplex products. Our voice application program interface (API) software allows Ascom Timeplex to quickly incorporate enhancements to Nuera's core voice code."

Nuera's E-CELP was recently rated No. 1 in voice quality, bandwidth utilization and lowest delay out of nine vendors' voice frame relay access devices (FRADs) evaluated in independent tests at National Software Testing Laboratories National Software Testing Laboratories, or NSTL, is an American company, established in 1983, which tests computer hardware and software. The company provides certification (such as WHQL and Microsoft Windows Mobile certification), quality assurance, and benchmarking  Inc.

The agreement provides Ascom Timeplex a software and support license for Nuera's E-CELP plus ITU-standard voice compression algorithms G.726 ADPCM (Adaptive Differential PCM) A widely used variation of PCM that codes the difference between sample points like differential PCM (DPCM), but can also dynamically switch the coding scale to compensate for variations in amplitude and frequency. , G.728 LD-CELP LD-CELP Low Delay-Code Excited Linear Prediction  and G.729 CS-ACELP CS-ACELP Conjugate Structure Algebraic Code-Excited Linear Prediction (voice compression, ITU-T Specification G.729 and G.729a)
