Nuera Communications Announces INSTA--TM-- Solutions Program to Drive Carrier Deployment of New Services.

Business Editors and High-Tech Writers

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 11, 2000

Program Based On Open Standards-Based Interoperability to Accelerate Deployment of Profitable New Services for Service Providers

Addressing Wholesale, Enterprise and Residential Markets

Nuera Communications Inc. Monday launched its comprehensive Interoperability-driven Strategic Alliance (INSTA INSTA Interstate
INSTA Instruments Authorized
(TM)) Solutions program to coordinate and promote efforts of leading equipment and application developers working closely with Nuera to enable carriers worldwide to deliver services based on advanced open standards Specifications for hardware and software that are developed by a standards organization or a consortium involved in supporting a standard. Available to the public for developing compliant products, open standards imply "open systems;" that an existing component in a system can be replaced .

The program's goal is to allow carriers to deliver basic and enhanced telephony services based on INSTA partners and featuring elements of Nuera's Open Reliable Communications Architecture (ORCA Orca - Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, 1986. Similar to Modula-2, but with support for distributed programming using shared data objects, like Linda. A 'graph' data type removes the need for pointers. Version for the Amoeba OS, comes with Amoeba. (R)) products. A key advantage of this program is that the basis for communication between end devices, carrier infrastructure equipment, applications and call control is based on open standards such as MGCP See MGCP/MEGACO.

MGCP - Media Gateway Control Protocol
, OSP (Online Service Provider) See online service.

OSP - Optical Signal Processor
and SIP, rather than proprietary implementations.

to the bottom line. An important aspect of Nuera's announcement is the company's unique commitment to extensively testing interoperability with its partners' products and to understanding how its products interoperate with partners. Nuera has already overcome many of the challenges carriers would otherwise encounter on testing in their own labs. Carriers who take advantage of these alliances can expect to save critical time and headaches on their way to deploying value-added services into residential and business markets."

Andy Voss, Nuera's vice president of strategy and business development, noted, "By inviting market and technical leaders to participate in the INSTA Solutions program, and by working closely with them to achieve a high level of interoperability, functionality and performance with our combined solutions, we plan to enable our mutual customers to achieve faster and more profitable growth in services revenue from deployment of open standards-based, IP-based telephony applications."

Members of the INSTA program include developers of unified messaging Having access to e-mail, voice mail and faxes via a common computer application or by telephone. For example, unified messaging may send faxes and digitized voice mail to a mail server that turns them into e-mail attachments.  and calling card service platforms, class 4 and class 5 softswitches, server-based IP-Centrex systems, billing software, and platform vendors for carrier infrastructure, enterprise and residential gateways. Nuera intends to grow the program quickly as new partners applications and equipment is determined to be fully interoperable and capable of meeting carrier expectations. Once only an analog system, the heart of most telephone networks today is all digital. In the U.S.  gateways for traffic load balancing The fine tuning of a computer system, network or disk subsystem in order to more evenly distribute the data and/or processing across available resources. For example, in clustering, load balancing might distribute the incoming transactions evenly to all servers, or it might redirect them . The latest version, 5.0, features scalability and reliability enhancements that ensure carrier-grade performance. The proxy server Also called a "proxy," it is a computer system or router that breaks the connection between sender and receiver. Functioning as a relay between client and server, proxy servers are used to help prevent an attacker from invading the private network.  can generate billing-related transactions that can be used by third-party billing intermediation partners. Carrier-class scalability is ensured via load-balancing and SRV record An SRV record or Service record is a category of data in the Internet Domain Name System specifying information on available services. It is defined in RFC 2782. Newer internet protocols such as SIP and XMPP often require SRV support from clients.  support that eliminate network bottlenecks and single points of failure.
