work together to deliver secure Voice-over-IP (VoIP) that is based on CableLabs PacketCable(TM) 1.0 security requirements. This solution provides encrypted and authenticated phone conversations over a cable network.

Nuera, Syndeo and InnoMedia implemented two standard technologies to achieve the voice security: Advanced Encryption Standard (cryptography, algorithm) Advanced Encryption Standard - (AES) The NIST's replacement for the Data Encryption Standard (DES). The Rijndael /rayn-dahl/ symmetric block cipher, designed by Joan Daemen and Vincent Rijmen, was chosen by a NIST contest to be AES.  (AES) and Multilinear Modular Hash (MMH MMH Modern Materials Handling

). AES is an encryption algorithm A formula used to turn ordinary data, or "plaintext," into a secret code known as "ciphertext." Each algorithm uses a string of bits known as a "key" to perform the calculations. The larger the key (the more bits), the greater the number of potential patterns can be created, thus making  that prevents unauthorized surveillance of a voice call. MMH authenticates the source of the encrypted voice packets and prevents a call from an unauthorized source.

"Customers demand privacy when speaking on the phone," said Larry Greenstein, Director of Product Management, Nuera. "The voice encryption technology that we will demonstrate at the Winter Conference will assure cable operators and consumers that there is a solution for secure VoIP over cable."

"Our MSO (1) (Multiple System Operator) Typically refers to a cable TV organization that owns more than one cable system, but it may refer to an operator of only one system.  customers have impressed strongly upon us the importance of being able to provide secure voice calls over their network. They consider it a 'must-have' for volume deployment," said Sohail Parekh, Syndeo's Vice President of Engineering. "This joint effort between Nuera, Syndeo, and InnoMedia shows cable operators that vendors are listening to them, and moreover are working together to deliver what they have asked for."

"We are excited about the market opportunities for secure VoIP over cable," said Shailesh Patel, Senior Director, Broadband Product Management, of InnoMedia Inc. "This solution is another demonstration of InnoMedia broadband technologies and products taking communications to the next level."

The CableLabs Winter Conference, Feb. 10-12, is a closed session for its members and addresses the strategic and technical issues companies face in the changing broadband business.
