MINNEAPOLIS -- A quote from Minnesota author and theater owner John Sweeney John Sweeney is the name of:
  • John Sweeney (labor leader), (1934-), American president of AFL-CIO.
  • John Sweeney (journalist), , BBC journalist.
  • John E. Sweeney, (1955-), American politician.

now appears on several million Starbucks cups nationwide as part of Starbucks' "The Way I See It" program. Sweeney is the owner of the Brave New Workshop The Brave New Workshop Comedy Theatre (BNW), located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, has been writing, performing and producing live sketch comedy and improvisation performances for 48 years-- longer than any other theatre in the nation.  (BNW BNW Brave New World (Iron Maiden album)

Sweeney's quote reads: "Improvisers don't look at change as an obstacle, we look at it as fuel. We know that the next great idea lies just on the other side of change. We are constantly asking ourselves, 'What can I do to incite To arouse; urge; provoke; encourage; spur on; goad; stir up; instigate; set in motion; as in to incite a riot. Also, generally, in Criminal Law to instigate, persuade, or move another to commit a crime; in this sense nearly synonymous with abet.  change?' Well?"

The quote itself is a tribute to the events leading up to its appearance on the cups. Sweeney accidentally double-booked himself when scheduled to speak as part of the Visiting Author Series at Starbucks Headquarters. Starbucks graciously rescheduled the event on short notice, but only six employees attended instead of 350 as normally expected. One of those six, however, advocated for Sweeney's quote on the cups. The kicker? On the original date, that person would not have been available.

Sweeney recalls, "When I saw six people in that cavernous auditorium, it was hard to remember that our company advocates embracing change as fuel. I was really thinking '#$@%&@!!!!' but I led a training session anyway and it went great. Because of what, at the time, felt like horrible change, something wonderful happened for our little company."

"I'm excited," concludes Sweeney, "and my 80-year-old Irish Catholic Irish Catholics is a term used to describe people of Roman Catholic background who are Irish or of Irish descent.

The term is of note due to Irish immigration to many countries of the English speaking world, particularly as a result of the Irish Famine in the 1840s - 1850s,
