Novo Nordisk and Schering sign research and development agreement on fertility drugs.

BAGSVAERD, Denmark; BERLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 24, 1996--Novo Nordisk A/S and Schering AG have entered into a long-term collaboration agreement on research and development of drugs for the treatment of infertility, as well as contraception.

The agreement focuses on compounds modulating the biosynthesis Biosynthesis

The synthesis of more complex molecules from simpler ones in cells by a series of reactions mediated by enzymes. The overall economy and survival of the cell is governed by the interplay between the energy gained from the breakdown of compounds
of natural meiosis-activating sterols sterols (ster´ôlz),
n.pl steroids having one or more hydroxyl groups and no carbonyl or carboxyl groups (e.g., cholesterol).
(MAS) and compounds which activate or inhibit the MAS-dependent process of meiosis.

MAS are present in women's ovaries Ovaries
The female sex organs that make eggs and female hormones.

Mentioned in: Choriocarcinoma

ovaries (ō´v
 and in male testes testes
 or testicles

Male reproductive organs (see reproductive system). Humans have two oval-shaped testes 1.5–2 in. (4–5 cm) long that produce sperm and androgens (mainly testosterone), contained in a sac (scrotum) behind the penis.
. Under normal circumstances the compounds will induce the oocyte oocyte /oo·cyte/ (-sit) the immature female reproductive cell prior to fertilization; derived from an oogonium. It is a primary o. prior to completion of the first maturation division, and a secondary o.  to complete meiosis, the specific cell division which results in halving the genetic material. Meiosis is a prerequisite for fertilization of the oocyte. The function of MAS in men is still unclear.

The agreement also includes a basic framework for eventual manufacturing and marketing. Costs will be split equally between the parties. Both parties will have the rights to sell the products worldwide.
