Following our examination of single, one-off houses in September, next month the AR turns its attention to the more fundamental subject of housing. Providing decent forms of habitation is one of the essential indicators of a civilized and humane society. We consider some of the best recent examples from around the world, projects that embody an inventive and sensitive approach to space and placemaking, often despite economy of means.

In Santa Monica, Koning Eizenberg's social housing provides dignified, affordable dwellings for low-income families that also enlivens the public realm. In Graz, Szyszkowitz Kowalski's community housing displays the spatial complexity, intimacy and dynamism that distinguishes the Graz school. And in Singapore, Bedmar & Shi's cluster housing is a subtle yet inventive reinterpretation of tropical archetypes.

We also look at some new approaches to housing -- for instance Team Haut's winning proposal for Europan 5 shows how the traditional courtyard form can be adapted as an ecologically-conscious prototype for the future. And in Glasgow, as part of the City of Architecture and Design initiative, an ambitious 'Homes for the Future' project explores new responses to urban living, examining issues such as changing family structures, environmental concerns and designing for special needs. Individual housing projects by Ushida Findlay, McKeown Alexander and Decq & Cornette, among others, form the starting point for a new community in one of Glasgow's oldest neighbourhoods.
