Two projects at Georgia-Pacific Corp.'s Old Town paper mill--the refurbishment of a chemical tank and the repainting of a steel and concrete ceiling deck above a kraft paper machine--demonstrate the effective use of teamwork, innovative safety techniques and advanced coatings technologies to put safety concerns to rest, minimize productivity disruptions and maximize equipment service life.

The group determined that a portable spider staging that would move up and down the sides of the tank to conduct surface preparation and coating application would help ensure safety and eliminate the potential for damage to nearby structures. Mill presses production to the limit with paper machine oil by Brenda Jones, Petro-Canada.

The Pine Falls mill, Pine Falls, Manitoba, Canada, is one of two newsprint production facilities operated by Tembec Paper Group. This facility runs two Bowser paper machines that date back to the 1930s. As at any paper machine facility, minimizing water contamination in paper machine oil is an everyday concern. Water contamination promotes corrosion and stress on gears, bearings, gaskets, and stack roils, leading to increased maintenance and downtime.

Three years ago, Pine Fails reviewed its use of paper machine oil. Technicians discovered that the paper machine oil's poor water separation was causing unacceptable contamination levels. To counter the problem, Pine Falls switched to a paper machine oil that offered better ability to separate from water and resist oxidation. Full article on www.tappi.org.

Anyone at a mill that has received its Clean Air Act Amendments Title V Operating Permit knows that the recordkeeping and reporting is very labor-intensive. It puts significant pressure on the environmental staff with daily responsibility for recordkeeping, and on the environmental professionals responsible for report preparation (quarterly and/or semiannual). It also puts pressure on the "responsible official," the signing authority for the Title V permit application.

This paper reviews the extensive recordkeeping challenges and reporting requirements for a Title V permit application, and illustrates how an electronic recordkeeping and reporting system can ease the operator's task to input the data, can help environmental managers to report, and will provide alarms for emission limit exceedances.
