Novellus Names Seasoned High-Tech Leader to Board of Directors; Lucent's William R. Spivey elected.

Commenting on the board changes, Novellus' Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Richard S. Hill stated, "Joe Van Poppelen has been an outstanding board member over the last five years. His marketing and sales knowledge helped shape the future of Novellus." Hill continued, "While we are sorry to see him leave, we are pleased to have someone of Dr. Spivey's caliber come on board."

Spivey has more than 27 years of managerial experience in high-volume, high-technology and electronic-oriented businesses. At Lucent Technologies since 1997, Spivey is directly responsible for the company's network products organization, with approximately 15,000 employees and $4 billion in revenues. Prior to Lucent, Spivey served for three years as the vice president of AT&T Corp.'s Microelectronics Systems and Components Group in Basking Ridge, N.J. From 1992 to 1994, he was president of Tektronix Development Co. (Wilsonville, Ore.) and vice president of the company's Business Alliances Group. Spivey also spent 13 years in various executive and managerial positions at Honeywell, Inc. in Minneapolis.
