:BAY) today announced that Novell Inc.'s Corporate Events Department has selected the Accelar(tm) 1200 routing switches to support its Novell Connecting Points network at the industry's largest and most prominent network and computer trade shows and conferences.

Novell Inc., based in Orem, Utah Orem is an incorporated town in the north-central part of the state of Utah in Utah County. It is adjacent to Provo, Lindon, and Vineyard and is about 45 miles south of Salt Lake City. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 84,324. , is a leading provider of network software, including NetWare, the market-leading network operating system An operating system that is designed for network use. Novell's Corporate Events Department provides email services to attendees at the network industry's leading trade shows and conferences, including NetWorld+Interop, Spring and Fall Comdex, and others. It also provides those services to attendees of Novell's annual BrainShare users group meeting. Novell automatically gives attendees a free account when they register for these shows and access to the Internet via Novell Connecting Points.

All attendees are automatically given a free account when they register for the show, and can also access the Internet via Connecting Points.

Since the number of email accounts varies from show to show, Novell's Corporate Events Department needed a flexible, high-performance networking solution that could easily scale to support from several hundred to several hundred thousand users.

At last fall's Comdex show, for instance, the email network was configured to support up to 300,000 email accounts using 60 Compaq ProLiant 6000 servers running Novell NetWare (operating system, networking) Novell NetWare - Novell, Inc.'s proprietary networking operating system for the IBM PC.

NetWare uses the IPX/SPX, NetBEUI or TCP/IP network protocols. It supports MS-DOS, Microsoft Windows, OS/2, Macintosh and Unix clients.

Bay Networks first donated the Accelar routing switches to Novell for use at this year's BrainShare conference in March. Novell's Corporate Events Department was so pleased with the performance and flexibility of the Accelar routing switches that it decided to purchase them for permanent use.

"We use the Novell Connecting Points to prove how well our products scale and how easy they are to manage in a large network environment. When we plugged in Plugged In is a monthly magazine put out by Focus on the Family (founder: James Dobson) which reviews movies, music, general media, and pop cultural issues from a conservative Christian perspective.  the Accelar routing switches, we saw a dramatic performance improvement," said Rhet Thalman, senior network engineer for Novell's Corporate Events Department. "Because they are modular, and there is such a variety of modules to use, you can swap, mix, and match modules to do whatever you want to do with the Accelar."

"The Accelar provides excellent price/performance and flexibility," Thalman added.

The Corporate Events Department has two Accelar 1200 routing switches and plans to purchase two more. Each Accelar routing switch is configured with 16 10/100Mbps ports, plus a Gigabit Ethernet An Ethernet standard that transmits at 1 Gbps. Used mostly to connect high-end workstations and servers as well as for network backbones, Gigabit Ethernet transmits full duplex from point to point using switches and half duplex in a shared environment (CSMA/CD) using a hub.  module and a 100BASE-FX module. The Accelar 1200 routing switch, based on a modular, eight-slot chassis, provides up to 96 10/100Mpbs ports and up to 12 Gigabit Ethernet ports.
