(stock abbreviation, AMEX) ), the leading provider of Net services software, announced today that they have entered into a long-term, global agreement that will allow developers to use Bitstream font technology in a Java environment. Under terms of the agreement, Novell will license Font Fusion Bitstream Font Fusion is a small, fast, object-oriented font engine written in ANSI C capable of rendering high-quality text on any platform, any device, and at any resolution. The entire source code is portable, optimized, and executes independent of operating system and processor. This new agreement enables Novell to render high-quality text in the NetWare(R) Java Virtual Machine A Java interpreter. NetWare helps customers extend existing networks and data into the Web, and IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. Ultimately, NetWare strengthens an organization's connections to customers, suppliers, and partners around the globe.

Font Fusion provides developers with full font fidelity and high-quality typographic output at any resolution on any device, while maintaining the integrity of the original character shapes. In addition, Font Fusion performs well in memory-constrained environments. For example, a complete traditional Chinese TrueType font with over 13,500 characters can occupy as much as 8MB. With Font Fusion, the same characters occupy less than 0.5MB, representing considerable savings in set-top box The cable TV box that sits on "top" of the TV "set," although it is often located several feet away in an equipment rack. Bitstream's core set of delta-hinted fonts, which Novell has licensed, includes 13 fonts that have been fine-tuned for computer monitors and other low-resolution display screens, as well as for LCD displays. The pack contains three font families, Dutch 801, Swiss 721, and Courier, as well as a Symbol font.

Bitstream's Unicode font provides extended language support in a single font. It supports extended characters and currency symbols; Baltic, Central European, Cyrillic, Greek, and Turkish characters; Hebrew and Arabic characters; and Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, and Vietnamese characters.
