Novel way of feeding pellets more accurately.

A new approach to feeding free-flowing pellets, flakes, or powders is up to twice as accurate as conventional screw, auger auger (ô`gər): see drill.

, or belt feeders, says K-Tron International Inc., Pitman, N.J. The technology was previously used to feed coal and shale shale, sedimentary rock formed by the consolidation of mud or clay, having the property of splitting into thin layers parallel to its bedding planes. Shale tends to be fissile, i.e., it tends to split along planar surfaces between the layers of stratified rock.  into crushers for power generation. What makes K-Tron's new Bulk Solids Pump Solids pump

A device used to move solids upward through a chamber or conduit. It is able to overcome the large dynamic forces at the base of a solids bed and cause the entire bed to move upward.

) so accurate is that material flow is linear. Pellets fall into a spool-like chamber and pack together solidly, held on both sides by discs at the ends of the spool. As the spool turns, the pellets move in plug flow until they reach an opening three-quarters of the way around and fall out. If the discs turn faster, they move more material, but impart no frictional frictional

heat or damage to the pellets.

The design is simple and open, so material changes are easy. K-Tron offers two models: BSP 100 (100 mm diam.) with one chamber for feeding up to 7 cu ft/hr at 30 rpm, and BSP 125 with two chambers for up to 32 cu ft/hr. For higher volumes, K-Tron has sold five-chamber units that feed up 160 cu ft/hr. A version of the smaller unit, named Posimax, was roiled out late last year by Colormax Ltd. in the U.K., a unit of K-Tron. It already has sold 60 units in Europe to injection and blow molders. K-Tron is now launching the larger model, targeting high-torque twin-screw compounding, where greater short-term feeding accuracy is needed at high output rates. Tel: (856) 589-0500, www.ktron.com
