The women's rights movement began in the nineteenth century with the demand by some women reformers for the right to vote, known as suffrage, and
within the broader social justice and peace movements.

The common global framework of women challenging social, economic and political structures and their assumptions of hierarchy and privilege must be reclaimed by women everywhere, but most particularly in North America North America, third largest continent (1990 est. pop. 365,000,000), c.9,400,000 sq mi (24,346,000 sq km), the northern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere.  and Europe, where many feminists have not engaged in the anti-globalization or peace movements, unlike many women in the global South. I WAS DELIGHTED TO RECEIVE the summer 2006 issue of Conscience. This is indeed a unique collection of articles.

The article by Kavita Ramdas Kavita Ramdas has been the President and CEO of the non-profit organization Global Fund for Women since 1996.

Ramdas was born and raised in Mumbai, India. She received her B.A. in international relations from Mount Holyoke College in 1985 and her M.P.A.
raises critical issues on "difference" and how to harmonize it. Kavita has been a friend for many years, and I admire her, her parents and her management of the Global Fund for Women. Her piece addresses issues and viewpoints that are raised in my book Women, Development and the UN--A Sixty-Year Quest for Equality and Justice, published by Indiana University Press Indiana University Press, also known as IU Press, is a publishing house at Indiana University that engages in academic publishing, specializing in the humanities and social sciences. It was founded in 1950. Its headquarters are located in Bloomington, Indiana. . Long may the dialogue continue in your truly valuable journal.
