Note from the jury chair.


Many of this year's entries for the 2004 Order of Excellence in Architecture & Design drew particular attention to the individual space. I personally was excited to see this, as we have seen so much emphasis and money placed on the "wow factor" of the main lobbies.

These designs provided the residents with the opportunity to personalize their apartment or room. One of the primary anxiety factors for elders considering a move to senior housing is lack of personal choice and control. Small design elements can provide incredible opportunity for making an otherwise sterile space into a home.

And, whether the resident is in independent, assisted or skilled care, the true goal should be to make it more like home.

Special recognition

This year's jury grants special recognition to Brigham House of Watertown, Mass., which through adaptive reuse Adaptive reuse is the process of adapting old structures for new purposes.

When the original use of a structure changes or is no longer required, as with older buildings from the industrial revolution, architects have the opportunity to change the primary function of the
