Think just one toke of a smoke or a few swigs of swill won't hurt you? Well, you're very wrong! According to a recent study by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, girls and young women get hooked much quicker and more severely using lesser amounts than boys do--and for different reasons. While boys generally smoke, drink or do drugs for a quick thrill or to look "cool," girls are more likely to indulge to relieve stress or alleviate depression. Says center chairman Joseph Califano, "Prevention programs have been designed with a one-size-fits-both-sexes mentality. We know girls are different than boys--let's recognize it, and let's help them." The study also points some blame at alcohol and tobacco companies for linking their products in ads to glamorous models. Let's get this straight--addiction is not attractive.
