Norwegian Hackers Crack DVD Code.


Late last year, a group of Norwegian programmers posted a program called DeCSS on the Internet. The program overrides the scrambling system built into DVD players A stand-alone device that plays DVDs. It contains a DVD drive and the electronics to decode the digital video. The device may play only manufactured DVDs, or it may be able to play DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW discs. The news is a blow to the film industry as well as the home video market. Many studios had insisted on universal protection from film pirates before releasing their libraries and new releases onto digital disk and pirated movies cost millions to the home video industry. Downloading the films from the Internet may prove difficult though, as film files are typically three to four gigabytes large.
