Northrop Corp. last week said Del Jacobs will direct the operations of the company's new research center that will be located at its Pico Rivera Pico Rivera (pē`kō rĭvĕr`ə), city (1990 pop. 59,177), Los Angeles co., SW Calif., SE of Los Angeles on the San Gabriel and Rio Hondo rivers; inc. 1958 with the union of Pico and Rivera into one community.  facility and will initially employ about 200 scientists, technicians and engineers.

Northrop said Jacobs will report to Max Weiss Miksa (Max) Weiss (July 21, 1857 – March 14, 1927) was a Hungarian chess player.

Weiss, who was Jewish, was born in Sereď. Moving to Vienna, he studied mathematics and physics at the university, and later taught those subjects.

Northrop Chairman Kent Kresa announced establishment of the center in May for development of future manned and unmanned aircraft Unmanned Aircraft (UA) is a term used in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) definition of Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS). Some aerospace and defense industry analysts have compared the Northrop center to Lockheed Corp.'s "Skunk Works" research facility in Burbank.

"This center will focus on the technologies and systems that will be required for future aircraft," said Kresa last week. "The advanced technology and design center will give Northrop a focused ability to pursue the long-term future of aircraft systems."

He said the center was established "to concentrate and direct our efforts on entirely new system concepts, technologies and vehicle designs - the seeds of our future aircraft systems business."

Jacobs joined Northrop in 1983 after a career as a test and fighter pilot for the Air Force. At Northrop, Jacobs has been a vice president for advanced development in the aircraft division, and vice president and program manager for the advanced tactical fighter The Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) contract was a demonstration and validation program undertaken by the United States Air Force to develop a next-generation air superiority fighter to counter emerging worldwide threats, including development and proliferation of Soviet-era Su-27  program.

He is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy and the California Institute of Technology California Institute of Technology, at Pasadena, Calif.; originally for men, became coeducational in 1970; founded 1891 as Throop Polytechnic Institute; called Throop College of Technology, 1913–20. .
