The unit's offensive and defensive arsenal includes air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles, naval rockets and missiles, fire control and sensor of Dallas, Tex., for Low Rate Initial Production (LRIP-2) of 609 BAT &uot;brilliant&uot; anti-armor submunitions installed into U.S. Army Tactical Missile System (TACMS TACMS Tactical Missile System ) warhead assemblies. Deliveries of BAT submunitions installed in missile warhead assemblies under the firm fixed price contract are scheduled to run through August 2002. BAT is an autonomous submunition that uses passive acoustic and infrared sensors to find, attack and destroy moving tanks and other armored vehicles in hostile territory. BAT is designed to be carried and dispensed by the Lockheed Martin Army TACMS Block II surface-to-surface missile as well as ground-, air- and sea-launched cruise missiles, artillery rockets and munitions mu·ni·tion n. The BAT submunitions are dispensed from the Army TACMS missile by an air bag ejection system. Once the Army TACMS warhead skin separates from the missile, the air bags inflate, pushing the BATs out of the missile body. The BATs then activate and begin searching for targets. &uot; This second low rate production contract effectively doubles our yearly rate and exemplifies the U.S. Army's continuing confidence in the outstanding ability of the BAT to search out and destroy moving enemy combat vehicles, day and night, and in adverse weather,&uot; said William H. Forster, vice president of Land Combat Systems at Northrop Grumman. An initial LRIP LRIP Low Rate Initial Production LRIP Limited Rate Initial Production LRIP Logistics Readiness Improvement Program contract for 304 BAT submunitions was awarded to the company last July. The total production potential is an estimated 20,000 BAT and product-improved BAT submunitions through the year 2011. The pre-planned, product-improved BAT, with expanded adverse weather performance capability against stationary targets and additional high-value target sets such as missile launch systems, is in development and will be introduced into production at Northrop Grumman's Land Combat Systems facilities in Huntsville. The BAT program is managed by the U.S. Army's TACMS-BAT Project Office at Redstone Arsenal.
