The San Francisco Bay Area, colloquially known as the Bay Area or The Bay
 communities continue to report the highest median incomes in the state.

The statewide median income on all returns was $31,122, an increase of 5.9 percent from 1999's amount. For joint returns, it was $57,979--5.9 percent more than 1999.

Marin County had the highest median income for joint returns, reporting $101,660, an increase of 8.7 percent from 1999.

Los Angeles County taxpayers filed 26 percent of all tax returns in California.
