The Gerdau Ameristeel company will now have 15 EAF mills in the United States and Canada with a combined production capacity of more than 8 million tons. Gerdau's purchase price for the acquired assets is $266 million in cash subject to adjustment for working capital fluctuations prior to the closing date. The agreement holds that at closing Gerdau Ameristeel will assume substantially all of the liabilities of the businesses being acquired, including specific contractual obligations and selected employee liabilities, according to Cargill. The four North Star Steel EAF mills have an annual production capacity of about 2 million tons of long steel products. Customers include steel service centers, original equipment manufacturers and steel fabricators. The four downstream wire rod and grinding ball facilities have an annual production capacity of approximately 300,000 tons.
