It is one of three agencies that fall under the Technology Administration (www.technology. ).

These internationally recognized agencies have established new calibration protocol to ensure accurate dosing of patients being treated for prostate cancer prostate cancer, cancer originating in the prostate gland. Prostate cancer is the leading malignancy in men in the United States and is second only to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in men.  during brachytherapy seed implantation. North American Scientific is the only company currently manufacturing both Iodine-125 and Palladium-103 brachytherapy products, distributed by the company's marketing partner Mentor Corp. (NASDAQ:MNTR) under the tradenames IoGold(TM) and PdGold(TM).

"North American Scientific has taken a leading role in the industry by being the first company to implement the NIST 1999 calibration protocol for Pd-103," said L. Michael Cutrer, NASI's president and chief executive officer. "We adopted the national standard for Pd-103 brachytherapy seed calibration prior to the launch of PdGold(TM) recognizing the NIST standard as the best means of ensuring accurate dose delivery and patient safety."

Cutrer added, "We also implemented the new NIST 1999 calibration protocol for the IoGold(TM) product on July 26, 1999 which coincided with the annual meeting of the AAPM in Nashville. Implementation of the new NIST 1999 calibration protocol for I-125, which makes the older NIST 1985 calibration technique obsolete, was established to more accurately describe product dosing characteristics based on AAPM recommendations and to further ensure accuracy in administering prescribed treatment."

"Our adoption of NIST and AAPM recommendations places NASI in the forefront of the brachytherapy industry with respect to calibration protocols. As a result, physicists and physicians are provided with the assurance of accurate dose delivery, independent of isotope selection since both PdGold(TM) and IoGold(TM) conform to these exacting standards."

Brachytherapy is a leading edge, minimally invasive procedure Minimally invasive surgical procedures avoid open invasive surgery in favor of closed or local surgery with less trauma. These procedures involve use of laparoscopic devices and remote-control manipulation of instruments with indirect observation of the surgical field through an  in which sealed, rice-sized radioactive seeds are implanted into the prostate thereby irradiating the cancerous tumor.
