In a prepared statement Mr. Street said that he had reviewed all publicly available information and that he believes the acquisition is an important step towards improving economic development in the city.

"Wheland Foundry is one of the largest water users in Chattanooga," said Mr. Street. "Under the current relationship with the New Jersey Company, water rates have never been competitive. In addition, the current arrangement impacts the city's ability to be competitive and attract new industry."

Mr. Street said that the city has personally assured him that under city ownership, the water utility will be run at the highest level of efficiency and that immediately after the city takes control water rates will drop.

"It's simply the right thing to do for the citizens of Chattanooga," Mr. Street further stated.

Founded in 1866, Wheland Foundry is the largest independent producer of gray iron automotive brake castings in the US, with almost half of all cars and light trucks built in the US containing one or more Wheland-made castings. Wheland currently employs more than 2,000 people in Tennessee and Georgia.

Requests for proposals will be sent out in mid-March. The City's plan calls for competitive selection of a private contractor to operate the system.
