Nortel to Acquire CoreTek.


Nortel Networks (Nortel Networks Limited, Brampton, Ontario, www.nortelnetworks.com) A world leader in telecommunications products, which includes switching, wireless and broadband systems for service providers and carriers, telephones and systems for residential and business users, computer telephony  Corp. has agreed to acquire start-up CoreTek, Inc., for $1.43 billion in stock. The acquisition will enable Nortel to enter the business of manufacturing optical-network components and enable it to compete with the advance laser systems of industry leader JDS Uniphase JDS Uniphase Corporation (JDSU) NASDAQ: JDSU is a company that manufactures and designs products for fiber optic communication and test equipment. It is headquartered in Milpitas, California, USA.  Corp. Nortel is a leader in making complex systems that manage traffic and speed data over fiber-optic networks, whereas JDS See Java Desktop System.  is strong in optical components for use in other companies' product lines.

CoreTek has been developing specialized tunable lasers A laser that can change its frequency over a given range. In time, tunable lasers are expected to be capable of switching frequencies on a packet by packet basis.  which transmit light beams over fiber-optic lines. The tunable aspect of their manufacturing process allows different wavelengths of light using fewer components than conventional lasers. By acquiring the company, Nortel leap frogs its own and competitor's research on the subject of tunable lasers and moves to the forefront of the industry.

However, its primary competitor, JDS Uniphase is scheduled to launch a tunable laser which will intensify in·ten·si·fy
