Norse Code: lapped in larch, this terrace will gradually grow into harmony with the surrounding forest.

Norway has a programme for providing affordable housing for young people, and one of its more ingenious recent products is the little scheme for 12 flats at Nesodden, near Oslo. Code, a young practice, won the competition for a site between a '60s suburb and a green common that overlooks the fjord fjord or fiord (fyôrd), steep-sided inlet of the sea characteristic of glaciated regions. Fjords probably resulted from the scouring by glaciers of valleys formed by any of several processes, including faulting and erosion by .

Fundamentally, the scheme is no more than a two-storey terrace of 43 [m.sup.2] flats. The main structure is of steel to avoid bearing internal walls, but all the rest is of timber, except where the ground slab (to which the RSJs are fixed) projects over the falling land to the north, propped on four concrete columns.

A simple, even dull parti is given dynamism by the handling of the east front. Here is a large gallery at first floor level that acts as access to the upper flats and which is hoped to provide a social space for all users. In plan, the gallery is cut to allow light down to the east-facing windows of the ground floor.

Larch is used to clad the flats, so that the whole will gradually weather grey together. Internally, the flats are divided in two by a wall with green sliding doors and partitions. A service strip includes entrance, bathroom and bedroom (the latter with inbuilt in·built
