When CBS News first announced its purchase in December 2002, Frank Governale, Vice President of Operations, CBS News, noted that the Norsat NewsLink(TM) would give CBS News added flexibility in its ability to provide on-the-spot news coverage from remote locations. A second news network, unnamed for "competitive reasons," also purchased NewsLink(TM) and is at work in an embedded front line assignment. As the war in Iraq continues, the terminals are performing exactly as predicted.

Simple to use and innovative, the Norsat NewsLink(TM) is among "the most capable and feature-rich system for its size in the industry," said Norsat President and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  Yutaka Ueda. Full system specifications can be found at http://www.norsat.com/products/omnilink/newslink.htm.

The latest Norsat NewsLink(TM) includes features that make the system dramatically simpler than traditional SNG solutions. The NewsLink(TM) incorporates unique and easy to use Microsoft Windows See Windows.

software with a new portable sunlight readable LCD screen and sealed keyboard that provides rich functionality such as a built-in dual-trace spectrum analyzer, carrier beacon detector, antenna alignment wizard, transmitter control, and alarming and diagnostic tools. Norsat will showcase new features, including the PocketPC spectrum analyzer, which displays the received spectrum from the satellite dish on a hand-held PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) A handheld computer for managing contacts, appointments and tasks. It typically includes a name and address database, calendar, to-do list and note taker, which are the functions in a personal information manager (see PIM).  (personal digital assistant) allowing easy antenna alignment and peaking.

"By integrating Microsoft Windows and PDA platforms into our product, we are opening the door to a whole new world of possibilities," commented Chris McCormack, General Manager, Norsat OmniLink(TM) Business Unit. "We have eliminated the cryptic displays, tiny front-panel buttons, and much of the black-art of satellite transmission which is typical of most existing SNG solutions. Anyone familiar with Windows can operate our system. This is truly liberating to broadcasters who have been shackled with adding an RF engineer to any SNG operation. In a way, we have demystified a technology that has long been the exclusive domain of RF engineers."

In its basic configuration, the Norsat NewsLink(TM) Model 3200 lists for US$99,000, which is $11,000 lower than the price for the first versions of the SNG terminal.

Norsat is currently accepting advance orders for the new product. Norsat can be found at NAB in booth N1220 in the North Hall, and outdoors at booth MM315 in the mobile media expo area from April 7-10th, 2003 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
