and a third by a second unnamed U.S. network news organization, were delivered by Norsat engineers early this week, thoroughly tested, and are now ready for news gathering operations.

Within days, the networks are expecting to broadcast live images from the frontlines of the current world news hot spot.

The Norsat NewsLink(TM) will allow these two news broadcasters to file reports from any remote area in the region - from mountaintops, the desert, mid-ocean, or from the middle of nowhere - instead of being tied to a fixed location. Norsat's engineers, on location in Kuwait City, have noted that other broadcasters are restricted in their remote broadcasting capabilities and have set up their traditional "flyaway fly·a·way

Norsat engineers accompanied the NewsLink(TM) terminals to Kuwait from Canada, via London, and are providing field training for news crews and reporters.

Michael Heaven, Norsat Executive Vice President, OmniLink(TM) Business Unit, said that Norsat technicians accompanied the units overseas so as to "ensure that our early adopters receive the maximum level of assistance in the field and that they know how to take full advantage of the technology."

The Norsat NewsLink (TM), which in its basic configuration lists for US$110,000, is a sophisticated adaptation of the satellite technology previously referred to as the Norsat "pico-terminal." The compact and specially designed terminal is carried in two suitcases and deployed easily in the field in several minutes without special tools.

The Norsat NewsLink(TM) allows the transmission of broadcast quality MPEG-2 video via DVB-S See DVB.  over satellite. The terminal is ideally suited for the transmission of video, voice, and IP data in remote or hostile environments See: operational environment. .

NewsLink(TM) part of a family of products

The Norsat NewsLink(TM) is a member of the Norsat OmniLink(TM) family of portable satellite terminals.

The first application of the portable technology, which combines Norsat's expertise in both microwave products and the open networks businesses, was seen in the first Norsat "pico-terminals." The "pico-terminal" product, featuring top-level privacy and security features, was renamed the Norsat SecureLink(TM).

"Over time, our intention is to develop and introduce additional portable terminal products to extend the Norsat product offering," said Mike Heaven, Norsat Executive Vice President, OmniLink(TM) Business Unit. The Norsat OmniLink(TM) group of products will provide a broad spectrum of portable satellite terminal products for a variety of vertical markets.

"The company sees many applications for this technology in education and medical services for deployment in areas of the world where no infrastructure exists to exchange high quality video, audio and data," he added.

Norsat's current OmniLink(TM) customer list is available on the Norsat website: (http://www.norsat.com/products/omnilink/omnilink.htm).
