Edgar John Bergen (February 16 1903 – September 30 1978) was an American actor and radio performer, best known as a ventriloquist. , voice of the legendary Charlie McCarthy, led Fjelstad to refine his skill, abetted by how-to tapes provided by Bergen more than 30 years ago. Today he performs with a half dozen characters that he owns, including Dudley, Eddie, Doc, Heidi and Harry, typically on the opening day of the school year and before a few community groups.
