EnviroSystems, Inc., has announced the availability of EcoTru[R], a nontoxic disinfectant cleaner for use in commercial applications including health care, hospitality travel, food processing, and military operations. This breakthrough product kills tuberculosis and a wide spectrum of viruses, bacteria, and fungi in five to 10 minutes without any of the hazards posed by other disinfectants.

Other disinfectant cleaners that kill pathogens all pose possible health concerns ranging from rashes to lung damage. These concerns create barriers to disinfectant use where it could be most needed (e.g., providing infection control for children, the elderly, and adults with compromised immune systems). EcoTru is the only disinfectant on the market that is registered with U.S. EPA in Toxicity Category IV (which means no warning labels are required for acute oral exposure, acute dermal exposure, acute inhalation, primary eye irritation, or primary skin irritation). It does not irritate the eyes and can be absorbed through the skin, inhaled, or swallowed without harmful effects.

EcoTru is environmentally safe. Its use therefore eliminates the costs and health risks associated with hazardous-chemical disposal. The product literally can be poured down the drain. It is nonflammable and can be safely stored almost anywhere. It also is nonoxidizing, nonacidic, and nonionic. EcoTrue won't corrode plastic, metals, or acrylic, so it is ideal for use on equipment and instruments. Because EcoTru is not a bleaching or staining agent, no special precautions are needed for clothing and other materials.

The active ingredient in EcoTrue is parachlorometaxylenol (PCMX), which has been a proven microbial disinfectant agent for over 50 years. What makes EcoTru unique, however, is its formulation from nanospheres of oil droplets 106 microns in diameter, which are suspended in water to create a nanoemulsion. The nanospheres carry surface charges that efficiently penetrate the surface charges on microorganism membranes. As a result, PCMX is effective at concentrations one to two orders of magnitude lower than used those in other disinfectants. That's why EcoTru has no toxic effects in people, animals, or the environment.
