Nonprofit excellence: recognizing key supporters.

Financial donors and volunteers are the lifelines of many nonprofit organizations Nonprofit Organization

, and thoughtful recognition.

The Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland Greater Cleveland is a nickname for the metropolitan area surrounding Cleveland in Ohio.

Northeast Ohio refers to a similar but substantially larger area as described below.
, a local, independent organization dedicated to the management, prevention, and cure of diabetes in northeast Ohio, implemented its recognition program 20 years ago to thank the corporate sponsors of our first major community fundraising event, "Swim for Diabetes." Corporate sponsors, called "high divers," were encouraged to form company teams and participate in the swim. After the event, each sponsor was given a plaque featuring a picture of the company's team and a thank-you message. As the event has continued across the years Across The Years is one of a few ultrarunning festivals still taking place in the USA. Founded in 1983 by Harold Sieglaff the race has changed over the years in location as well as organisation. Today the race is held at Nardini Manor about 45 minutes from downtown Phoenix, AZ. , so has this form of recognition.

How do we know that this recognition is appreciated? Year after year when we go back to these companies to request additional sponsorship, we see the plaques hanging in their reception areas. The plaques not only recognize the company; but they also provide the association with visibility in the community.

Here are some other ways to thank financial supporters:

* Give them the title sponsorship of a special event.

* Hold a lecture in their honor.

* Name a program after them.

In addition to thanking corporate supporters, we recognize the individuals who are intimately involved with our organization as well. Each year, for example, we recognize honorary trustees, trustees of the year, and employees of the year at our annual meeting. These honorees receive a token of appreciation, such as engraved en·grave

frames or engraved paperweights; they also receive permanent recognition on a plaque in our boardroom. We also sponsor a yearly volunteer luncheon and nominate our outstanding volunteers for community awards from the United Way and the Federation on Community Planning.

Because not everyone wants to be publicly recognized, don't forget the simplest display of appreciation available--saying "thank you." Remember: Your volunteers and financial supporters help your organization operate. Give them the recognition and personal thanks that they deserve.
