Non-halogenated FRs for glass-reinforced nylons.

Two developmental non-halogenated flame retardants are the first of a new generation of FR additives for glass-reinforced nylon 6 and 66 electrical/electronic components. Developed by Clariant Corp.'s Pigments & Additives Div., Coventry, R.I., Exolit OP 1311 and 1312 are based on metal phosphinates and synergists suitable for glass-reinforced compounds. Exolit OP 1312 is a specially stabilized system for injection molding injection molding

Both are said to give a Comparative Tracking Index The Comparative Tracking Index or CTI is used to measure the electrical breakdown (tracking) properties of an insulating material.  FRs. Amounts needed to achieve UL 94V-0 or a Glow Wire Flammability Index (GWFI) of 960 C are said to be well below those for other FRs except for red phosphorus (Chem.) an allotropic modification of phosphorus, obtained as a dark red powder by heating ordinary phosphorus in closed vessels. It is not poisonous, is not phosphorescent, and is only moderately active chemically. . They also reportedly allow easy dispersion and good flow and colorability.

Pilot quantities are currently available. A large-scale plant in Germany will be brought on line at the end of 2004. Tel: (401.) 823-2000, www.clariant.com
