Non-Profits in Northern California Counties Awarded $375,000 In Grants From Starbucks.

Fourth Year of Grants for Giving Program Funds Twelve

Groups Serving Youth and Families

Today 12 non-profit organizations from Northern California Northern California, sometimes referred to as NorCal, is the northern portion of the U.S. state of California. The region contains the San Francisco Bay Area, the state capital, Sacramento; as well as the substantial natural beauty of the redwood forests, the northern  received grants totaling $375,000 from Starbucks Grants for Giving, which is a unique program only in Northern California. The program awards grants to exceptional non-profit organizations working to build better futures for youth and families. This year, the Starbucks Grants for Giving program has expanded beyond the Bay Area and Greater Sacramento to include all Northern California counties. This expansion was a result of the positive feedback Grants for Giving received from Northern California residents, non-profit organizations, and local Starbucks partners (employees).

This year, more than 1,500 applications were received. The grant amounts were selected based on need and ranged from $10,000 to $75,000 per finalist. The 2004 grantees are outstanding organizations that truly work to positively impact the communities they serve.

Now in its fourth year, Starbucks Grants for Giving program has awarded more than $1.4 million in grants to non-profit organizations. "Grants for Giving's success enriches the Starbucks tradition of giving back to the communities where we do business," said Gina Marino, regional vice president for Starbucks Northern California. "We are honored to have the opportunity to work with these remarkable non-profit organizations."

 organizations provides services that address the needs of youth and families in Northern California, including after-school activities for at-risk youth, literacy and education programs, services for homeless families and victims of domestic violence, and enriching activities for disabled kids.

Starbucks commits to the long-term support of its Grants for Giving recipients through the volunteer efforts of its more than 7,000 partners (employees) throughout Northern California. Each grant recipient teams with a Starbucks partner who serves as an ambassador for the organization -- driving enthusiasm, support, and volunteer hours for the grantee among local Starbucks partners.

The 2004 grant recipients are:

-- San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  Women Against Rape (SF WAR) provides advocacy

and education to survivors of sexual assault in San Francisco.

They intend to use the grant to expand their STAND program,

which educates students in public schools and community-based

organizations about violence against women and children.

-- Kid Serve Youth Murals links public art to public school

curriculum in the Mission and Castro districts of San

Francisco. Their projects integrate curriculum, social values,

creativity, and community service for young people while

creating stunning permanent public art in their communities.

-- Project H.E.L.P., an early academic intervention program,

based in Sunnyvale, is designed to provide supplemental

instruction to underachieving elementary-aged public school

students in Sunnyvale and Santa Clara Santa Clara, city, Cuba

. The grant monies will

allow them to build upon their literacy and math centers with

an array of learning resources.

-- Tamalpais High School's MOSAIC / Camp Anytown program, from

Mill Valley, educates young people in subjects such as

prejudice, disability, relationships and family. The grant

will aid in the expansion of activities that promote real

world learning for students during off campus retreats.

-- YWCA's Safe House, a Santa Rosa-based program that provides a

24-hour hotline, support groups, and legal services legal services n. the work performed by a lawyer for a client.  for

survivors of domestic violence, will use their grant towards

the continuation and enrichment of the children's program.

-- Open Door Community Health Centers from Eureka, offers health

care and preventative health education to residents of

this grant, the ODCHC will work on reading development with

low-income children and encourage children and parents to read

together at home.

victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. They will be

opening a new emergency shelter Emergency shelters are places for people to live temporarily when they can't live in their previous residence, similar to homeless shelters. The main difference is that an emergency shelter typically specializes in people fleeing a specific type of situation, such as battered  program in Tracy for battered

women and their children.

-- Elk Grove Elk Grove can refer to:

 Unified School District's Twilight Program offers

safe and enriching after-school learning activities for

families in the high-poverty neighborhoods of South

Sacramento. The program's primary goals are to increase the

students' academic achievement, involve parents in their

children's education, and support working parents.

-- Trinity Children & Family Services' Supportive Transitional

Educational Program (STEP) promotes self-sufficiency through

career planning and preparation training for youth graduating

from the foster care system. In addition to providing the

treatment and therapy needed to heal, Trinity provides youth

with independent living skills, employment information,

internships, community service and education.

-- Sports4Kids creates sports and recreational opportunities to

enhance the health and well-being of youth in Alameda, San

Francisco and Contra Costa Contra Costa can refer to:

 counties. Grant funds will be used

to provide quality lunchtime, recess and after-school youth

programs at five low-income elementary schools.

-- Special Needs Aquatic Program (SNAP) is an aquatic

recreational and motor development program located in Richmond

which provides a place where special needs children can

allows SNAP to upgrade equipment and training for the program,

and offer reduced fees and scholarships to participants.

-- The Monument Crisis Center provides healthy food, nutrition

education and meal planning assistance for families in

Concord. The grant funds will be used to expand the program

and help cover the cost of additional food to serve more

families.
