Non-Invasive Tests for Alzheimer's Disease 'Within Reach Today' Says Power3 Medical.

Houston Firm Continues Validation of Blood Serum-based Testing; 'Fast, Simple, Accurate Tests - Not Spinal Taps,' Says CEO Steven Rash

HOUSTON -- Power3 Medical Products, Inc. (OTCBB: PWRM), announced today that it has concluded its initial research and has moved toward commercialization by continuing to validate and perfect its proprietary blood serum-based tests to diagnose Alzheimer's disease. Power3 said these non-invasive tests, developed by using protein biomarkers it discovered, have shown greater than 90% sensitivity in identifying patients with Alzheimer's disease, including patients that are pre-symptomatic.

A leading proteomics company, Power3 (www.Power3Medical.com) continues to develop proteomic testing and biomarker discovery methods for early detection, monitoring, and staging of a broad range of diseases, including breast cancer, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease).

"Alzheimer's statistics are alarming," said Steven B. Rash, chairman and CEO of Power3 Medical, noting that more than 4 million Americans have Alzheimer's, and that "even more will suffer the unspeakable consequences of Alzheimer's as our population ages." Power3, he said, has concluded its extensive research on proprietary blood serum-based tests for Alzheimer's and is now in "the final stages" of validating its patent-pending protein biomarkers via clinical validation studies.

"The next step," he said, "is to finalize development of our test and to have it distributed through strategic partners to hospitals, clinics and doctors in the 2007-2008 timeframe. It is imperative to launch this test quickly, because today the only true accurate test for Alzheimer's is by autopsy. The Power3 test, now in final clinical validation studies, has demonstrated the promise of detecting the disease before symptoms occur. Our goal," he said, "is to have the first AD diagnostic test on the market.

"We need fast, accurate tests," he said. "We need tests that differentiate, so doctors and medical professionals can begin appropriate treatment as quickly as possible. What we don't need are painful and potentially hazardous tests performed at unnecessarily high cost and risk, such as "the recently announced spinal tap Alzheimer's test that was in the news last week."

Blood Test vs. Spinal Tap? No Choice!

Mr. Rash said he has received calls and e-mails about the spinal tap test, which "at least uses biomarkers. But why would anyone choose a painful and potentially harmful spinal tap rather than a simple blood test? Talk about invasive, painful and dangers, including infection, and you're talking about a spinal tap," he said.

The Power3 CEO emphasized that there is a choice when it comes to testing, and that testing for Alzheimer's must also be able to differentiate between other, often-treatable forms of dementia and other ailments, including stroke-related loss of memory or movement.

Dr. Yadagiri Chepuru, a geriatric psychiatrist based in Yonkers, N.Y., said that he "would not recommend spinal tap testing as a routine procedure" for his patients.

"While the spinal fluid would no doubt provide valuable information, a spinal tap is invasive and cumbersome, and can cause headaches and other painful side effects," Dr. Chepuru said. "It is my hope that blood tests which help diagnose and differentiate between Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia, such as now being developed and evaluated, will provide a tool that doctors and other medical professionals can recommend and benefit from with surety, speed and safety."

'Power3 in Leadership Position'

This summer, Power3 Medical announced a biomarker breakthrough based on the isolation of five distinctive biomarkers from its portfolio of 47 previously identified protein biomarkers for neurodegenerative diseases. "These and other selected biomarkers," he said, "show great promise and represent a major step forward as a tool for the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.

"The team of scientists at Power3 has applied extensive analytical and statistical analysis which resulted in the selection of these optimal biomarkers," said Mr. Rash. "We believe these protein biomarkers have the potential to be used in the development of a high throughput serum-based diagnostic tests for Alzheimer's disease, and that understanding the biological significance of these biomarkers could be beneficial in the establishment of new therapeutic drug targets as well."

Mr. Rash said preliminary sensitivity and specificity using these biomarkers in the evaluation of more than 600 patients with neurodegenerative diseases has exceeded expectations. Further clinical evaluation, including a pilot program in Europe scheduled to conclude in the first quarter and collaborative efforts with pharmaceutical and diagnostic companies, and with universities in the U.S. and abroad, foreign companies, is on-going. Mr. Rash said Power3's plan is for these companies and institutions to become its partners in the worldwide commercialization of these diagnostic tests.
