Nokia introduces its first 1900 MHz CDMA phone for the Americas.


IRVING, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 3, 1997--

The new Nokia 2170 reinforces Nokia's commitment

to CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) A method for transmitting simultaneous signals over a shared portion of the spectrum. The foremost application of CDMA is the digital cellular phone technology from QUALCOMM that operates in the 800 MHz band and 1.9 GHz PCS band.  technology

Nokia today introduced the company's first Code Division Multiple Access-based 1900 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. Larry Paulson, vice president, CDMA product line management at Nokia Mobile Phones Inc., said the Nokia 2170, along with the Nokia 2180 dual-mode 800 MHz CDMA/AMPS phone introduced in November, underscores Nokia's serious commitment to CDMA technology. Both phones incorporate Nokia's own CDMA chip design, which provides customers a choice in selecting CDMA digital technology.

"Now CDMA-based carriers and their subscribers can enjoy the ease of use, extended talk time, outstanding standby time and exceptional call clarity that Nokia customers worldwide enjoy," Paulson said. "The 2170 is extremely user-friendly and comes with a complete line of accessories."

The Nokia 2170 incorporates all of Nokia's award- winning features, including the company's pioneering, big-screen, 30-character, super-twist LCD display with permanent signal and battery-strength indicators, and separate voice mail and text-message-waiting indicators.
