Nokia announces new portable cellular phone for retail distribution; The 8.5 ounce Nokia 636 sets the new standard as the phone for everyone.

TAMPA, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 6, 1995--Nokia Mobile Phones, the world's second largest manufacturer of cellular phones, today introduced the Nokia 636, a lightweight, analog cellular phone specially designed for the mass retail market.

The Nokia 636 incorporates feedback from both existing and new cellular phone users to provide a user-friendly phone for the retail consumer market. Improvements made for these users include a large, easy-to-read display panel, one-touch keys that make features easier to use, and simplified programming to allow quick activation for retail distributors. A full complement of accessories ranging from fast AC/DC AC/DC

"First-time users are the fastest growing segment of the cellular market," said Matt Wisk, director of marketing, Nokia Mobile Phones, Inc. "Our research shows these users want good value and an easy-to-use phone -- not necessarily the most features. We have proven that theory with the extremely popular Nokia 100, and now are building on that success with a phone that's even more optimized for this market."

The Nokia 636 was designed for distribution through the retail channel. Nokia research indicates that as the demographic and psychographic In the field of marketing, demographics, opinion research, and social research in general, psychographic variables are any attributes relating to personality, values, attitudes, interests, or lifestyles. They are also called IAO variables (for Interests, Attitudes, and Opinions).  profiles of cellular users expand from the traditional business user, retail will become an increasingly effective way to reach those customers. To help support this transition, Nokia has increased its brand recognition through advertising and sports sponsorship programs, such as the Nokia Sugar Bowl.

The Nokia 636 includes a host of features that make it ideal for new users. These include: four, one-touch "function" keys that minimize the key strokes necessary to place calls for emergency assistance or to list the last five phone numbers dialed; a red #9 key that is pre-programmable to dial 911 or an emergency service number; a "keyguard" feature that protects the phone from accidental operation, which can be automatically activated when the END key is pressed and held.

In its standard configuration, the Nokia 636 weighs 8.5 ounces, provides two hours of talk time and 26 hours of standby standby Medtalk adjective Referring to the immediate availability of a certain specialist–anesthesiologist, surgeon, who can be deployed in a medical emergency. "Nokia is a leader in taking advanced technologies and then delivering products that provide intuitive solutions to the everyday communication needs of its customers," said Jamie Keeffe, product marketing manager, Nokia Mobile Phones, Inc. "The Nokia 636 has a pleasing appearance, is comfortable to hold and easy to operate. Its abbreviated, menu-driven NAM programming ensures it will be easy for retailers to sell to consumers."
