Nokia Recognized for Innovations in Access Technology; Global Leader in Mobile Phones Wins Access Engineering Award.

IRVING, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 30, 1999--

Nokia (NYSE:NOK) today received the prestigious Access Innovation Award from the Association of Access Engineering Specialists (AAES) for the Nokia LPS-1 Loopset.

The award, which recognizes innovations and advancement in access technology, was presented during the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA) annual conference in Long Beach, Calif. David J. Dzumba, Director of Industry Solutions for Nokia, accepted the award.

Nokia received the award in recognition of its industry leadership and breakthrough work in developing products for people with disabilities, according to Dzumba. The Nokia LPS-1 Loopset accessory uses induction technology to transmit sound from a digital mobile phone to a T-coil hearing aid. It is compatible with the Nokia 6100 and Nokia 5100 series phones.

"This recognition illustrates how Nokia's history in designing easy-to-use features has accelerated to include accessibility needs," Dzumba said. "Many of our phones and accessories already make functions easier, even though they were not developed directly for disabled consumers. We're taking that one-step further and designing specifically with accessibility in mind."

AAES is holding its meeting in conjunction with the RESNA conference, "Spotlight on Technology." RESNA is an interdisciplinary association of people with a common interest in technology and disability. The AAES is an organization that facilitates interaction between the telecommunications industry and groups committed to empowering people with disabilities.

The AAES meeting included a workshop called "Accessibility Design of Information Technology and Telecommunications Products and Services," which provided a forum for companies and consumer representatives to share information, identify issues, explore solutions and foster cooperation among service providers, manufacturers, and the disability community. Dzumba spoke about Nokia's efforts at the workshop.
