Nokia Complements 3rd Generation System With New Launches.

Business Editors

HELSINKI, Finland--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 2, 2000

Triple-mode Nokia MetroSite family ideal for GSM, EDGE and WCDMA (Wideband CDMA) A 3G high-speed digital data service provided by cellular carriers that use the TDMA or GSM technology worldwide, including AT&T (formerly Cingular) and T-Mobile in the U.S.  Nokia has enhanced and added to its 3rd Generation System Solution, that provides EDGE and Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) networks for mobile operators. After introducing the world's first triple-mode Nokia UltraSite Base Station for wide area coverage, Nokia brings this multi-standard capability to traffic hot-spots with the Nokia MetroSite Base Station family, providing capacity and coverage enhancement for global GSM, EDGE and WCDMA network operators.

Building on Nokia's leading position in 3rd Generation network solutions, a seamless transition to true mobile multimedia services can be built from GSM through General Packet Data Services, to EDGE and WCDMA. The Nokia 3rd Generation Systems offer smooth evolution from 2nd Generation technology, providing a complete network solution for both new and existing mobile operators.

Jukka Auramo, Vice President, Sales, Radio Access Systems, Nokia Networks says; &uot;By expanding our product range, Nokia gives operators the ability to scale their networks according to according to

service demand, protecting their network investments and providing an optimum portfolio of services for their end-users. Now, the winners will be those who begin looking towards mobile multimedia now. Nokia is leading the transition from mobile voice to mobile data, for operators, content providers and Internet Service Providers Internet service provider (ISP)

To complement the popular Nokia MetroSite capacity solution, Nokia introduces two new products: the Nokia MetroSite EDGE Base Station for GSM and TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) A satellite and cellular phone technology that interleaves multiple digital signals onto a single high-speed channel. For cellular, TDMA triples the capacity of the original analog method (FDMA).  markets and the Nokia MetroSite WCDMA Base Station for 3rd Generation networks. These new additions to Nokia's unique &uot;triple-mode&uot; product family are part of Nokia's vision to provide a smooth evolution path to 3rd Generation mobile networks.

The new Nokia MetroSite WCDMA Base Station provides focused coverage and capacity to help operators complete their WCDMA networks seamlessly. Designed to be compact and lightweight, it is suitable for locations that offer limited space such as poles, walls, tunnels and attics, in both indoor and outdoor environments.

Its compact size and design helps to speed up site implementation for rapid network rollout, resulting in shorter time to market for new mobile multimedia services. The Nokia MetroSite WCDMA Base Station can be co-sited with Nokia MetroSite GSM and EDGE Base Stations to limit the number of new sites needed when rolling out a WCDMA network. This can lead to significant savings in equipment costs.

The new high-power Nokia MetroSite EDGE Base Station offers full GSM/EDGE capability from the outset. It is not only effective in the same microcellular applications as the original Nokia MetroSite Base Station, but is also ideal for infill coverage in macrocellular networks.

Nokia also unveils the unique Nokia Smart Radio Concept (SRC (SouRCe) Contrast with DST, which is an abbreviation of "destination." ); a flexible antenna solution designed to help mobile operators reduce capital investments during initial rollout of WCDMA networks.

The high bit rates needed to provide seamless 3rd generation services demand good coverage and sufficient capacity throughout the WCDMA network service area. With the Nokia SRC solution, operators can improve capacity by up to 75% with roughly 30 % fewer sites than would be otherwise required with traditional network rollout methods.

In addition, the triple-mode Nokia UltraSite solution has been enhanced with a new Nokia UltraHopper Microwave Radio transmission option.

Nokia provides 3G systems for both WCDMA and EDGE technologies. These include Base Station Subsystems, Circuit and Packet Switching A network technology that breaks up a message into small packets for transmission. Unlike circuit switching, which requires the establishment of a dedicated point-to-point connection, each packet in a packet-switched network contains a destination address.  Systems, Service and Network Management Systems including Service Provisioning and Billing, and 3G Terminals. In addition to infrastructure and software, Nokia Professional Services (job) professional services - A department of a supplier providing consultancy and programming manpower for the supplier's products.  provides comprehensive service solutions for planning, deploying, managing and enhancing 3G systems.

Nokia is paving the way to the mobile information society with its innovative products and solutions. Nokia is the leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile, fixed and IP networks, related services as well as multimedia terminals. In 1999, net sales Net Sales
