Nobake binder offers good cure time, less smoke/odor. (New product).

Ashland Specialty Chemical Co., Dublin, 0hio, has introduced a new nobake binder system based on furan technology. The Magnaset binder system has undergone field-testing and is currently in trials at several North American and international locations, his technology is applicable to all me al types and nobake mold/ coremaking processes.

The purpose of the new technology is to help bridge the gap between phenolic-urethane nobake (PUNB) and furan binder systems in terms of speed and environmental characteristics.

In comparing the new technology to PUNB, hoodstack laboratory emissions tests show a 33% reduction in hazard us air pollutants and an 86% reduction in VOCs. (Results will vary in foundries based on conditions.) With the utilization of a continuous mixer, strip-times of less an 3 mm have been achieved with the new technology. Further, these benefits are obtained without adversely impacting the environmental, reclamation or other advantageous properties of furans.

Two foundry trials showcase the flexibility of he new system. In the first instance, an iron foundry making large-section castings needed to speed up the strip time on its core line to reduce process costs The new technology offered solid car in less than 5 mm with minimal adjustments to the foundry's process.

In the second case, another large-section iron caster was looking for a mar rapid through-cure in its large mold line in order to manipulate the molds sooner and lower process cost. The new technology gave a 30% faster through-cure than the traditional binder, allowing he foundry to manipulate the molds 6 in faster than before.
