No to Catholic radio. (News in Brief: Canada).

Toronto--Hopes for a Catholic radio station to serve the Greater Toronto Area were dashed April 17 when the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission failed to award a licence to Catholic Youth Studio--KSM Inc., a Toronto-area non-profit corporation founded in 1994. The corporation had sought a licence based on a call by the CRTC in March 2001 for applicants to operate AM, FM and transitional digital radio programming services aimed primarily at the multi-cultural and multi-ethnic communities comprising the GTA.

A disappointed Father Marian Gil, director of the Catholic corporation, said the rejection came despite an application that was "very compelling" and brought together many cultures and organizations. He urged supporters not to become discouraged or resigned, but to continue with the radio ministry as it now stands. The Catholic Radio Program currently broadcasts four days a week in English and seven days a week in Polish on CIAO AM 530 in Toronto. Meanwhile Protestant-Evangelical groups are acquiring one radio station after another. The latest station has opened in Whitehorse, YT, and another "Christian" (i.e. Protestant), radio station in Belleville, ON, has been given the green light by the CRTC. Do the Evangelicals know something that Catholics don't?
