No More Burning Tree

THE MICHIGAN Republican Party The Michigan Republican Party is the state affiliate of the national Republican Party in Michigan. It is sometimes referred to as MIGOP, which simply means Michigan Grand Old Party.  held its state convention recently, and Jerry Ford wouldn't recognize his old party. A majority of the delegates on the floor were evangelical Christians--some of them Pat Robertson Marion Gordon "Pat" Robertson (born March 22 1930)[1] is a televangelist from the United States.[2] He is the founder of numerous organizations and corporations, including the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN),  backers, others not.

The Republican nominee for governor, and putative leader of the state party, is William Lucas, black former New York City New York City: see New York, city.

 was dropped from the state ticket, and Lucas opposed opening the convention to debate about sex education, school prayer, and other matters dear to the fundamentalists--and they went along with it. In return, however, they received commitments on nominees for state posts. The process represented compromise and trade-offs among heretofore unlikely groups of Republicans.

Lucas has an uphill fight against popular Democratic governor James Blanchard James Johnston Blanchard (b. August 8 1942, Detroit, Michigan) is a politician from the U.S. state of Michigan. A Democrat, Blanchard has served in the United States House of Representatives, as Governor of Michigan, and as United States Ambassador to Canada. , but he is showing skills that may make him the nation's first black governor. He is a conservative. He appears to be constructing a new Republican equation in Michigan. This is not Grand Rapids-Burning Tree Republicanism.
