The Port Authority oversees the New York-New Jersey transportation infrastructure. Approximately 300,000 vehicles drive daily across the bridge that links New Jersey and New York.

The Professional Insurance Agents of New Jersey supported the decision. The trade association believes no state regulated authority should allow advertisements that may be construed as supported by the state government.

The 64-feet-wide and six-feet-high sign read "Geico Drive Safely," and was placed above the canopy of the bridge's upper level toll booths. It was never unveiled. The deal also would have allowed the United States' fourth-largest auto insurer to place its branding icon, the gecko gecko (gĕk`ō), small or medium-sized lizard of the family Gekkonidae. The more than 300 species are distributed throughout the warm regions of the world, mostly in the Old World. Despite folklore to the contrary, their bite is not poisonous. , at each of the bridge's 30 toll booths.
