No bones about it -- holiday foods are no treat for your pet; tips for keeping your pet happy and healthy during the holiday season.

CORONA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 16, 1994--Holidays have not traditionally brought joy to the world of pets.

Visits to veterinary emergency rooms generally double during the holiday season, due primarily to the fact that people feed their pets table scraps without realizing that certain foods cause severe allergic reactions in pets. In fact, 80 percent of pets cannot tolerate many favorite holiday foods and, in severe cases, can die within four to six hours of eating turkey or pork.

Dr. Al Plechner, D.V.M., and co-founder of Nature's Recipe Pet Foods, advises against feeding dogs and cats any table scraps during the holidays. Foods to specifically keep out of ``paw's reach'' include:

-- all holiday candy and sweets

-- beef, turkey and pork, including the bones

-- eggs

-- shellfish
