It is the northernmost volcano of the Andean Volcanic Belt and lies about 15 miles southeast of Manizales, with the town of Armero in the valley below. . Victoria Bruce. 2001/2005. Resembling a mountain in size; huge: mountainous waves. mountainous Adjective 1. country with many towns and villages located in the shadow of active volcanoes. This book shows that as recently as the 1980s, virtually nothing scientific was known about these dangerous volcanoes. Predictably, the result was a horrific eruption eruption /erup·tion/ (e-rup´shun) 1. the act of breaking out, appearing, or becoming visible, as eruption of the teeth. 2. of Nevado del Ruiz in 1985 that set off a mudslide that killed 23,000 people. This was followed in 1993 by an eruption of another volcano volcano, vents or fissures in the earth's crust through which gases, molten rock, or lava, and solid fragments are discharged. Their study is called volcanology. , Galeras, that killed nine people, including six scientists. The scientists were studying the volcano and actually standing in its crater crater, circular, bowl-shaped depression on the earth's surface. (For a discussion of lunar craters, see moon.) Simple craters are bowl-shaped with a raised outer rim. Complex craters have a raised central peak surrounded by a trough and a fractured rim. at the time of the eruption; their leader Stanley Williams This article is about Stanley Tookie Williams III. For the dance instructor, see Stanley Williams (ballet). Stanley Tookie Williams III (December 29, 1953 – December 13, 2005), born in Monroe, Louisiana, was a convicted murderer and an early leader had totally missed the clear signs on the seismograph showing that an eruption was imminent. Geologist Bruce's narrative is breathtakingly critical of Stanley Williams for his poor leadership and for his subsequent behavior in stealing other scientists' ideas on the causes of the eruption. Toren offers a clear and professional reading of this page-turner. This book will be enjoyed by a wide audience.
