The expression comes from the Chinese ideograph for the place where the sun comes from, or Land of the Rising Sun.  Shinyaku Co., Ltd. announced on December 15, 2007 that Roche will terminate the License Agreement on Nippon Shinyaku's new investigational drug, NS-220, for the treatment of dyslipidemia dyslipidemia /dys·lip·id·e·mia/ (-lip?id-e´me-ah) abnormality in, or abnormal amounts of, lipids and lipoproteins in the blood.

Roche's decision is based purely on a regular portfolio review and prioritization exercise that has just been completed across its pharmaceuticals division.

NS-220 is a novel agent discovered by Nippon Shinyaku and was licensed out to Roche in September 2003. Roche has been conducting the Phase I studies in Europe from December 2004.

The future strategy of NS-220 development, including search for a new development partner in and outside Japan, will be decided after reviewing the result of Phase I studies performed by Roche.
