Nine Thousand Shipyard Workers Strike.


Newport News, Virginia Newport News is an independent city in Virginia. It is on the southwestern end of the Virginia Peninsula, on the north shore of the James River extending to its mouth at Hampton Roads.

The origin of the unusual name of "Newport News" is unclear.
 In April, more than 9,000 workers went on strike at Newport News Newport News, independent city (1990 pop. 170,045), SE Va., on the Virginia peninsula, at the mouth of the James River, off Hampton Roads, near Norfolk; inc. 1896.  Shipbuilding, which makes the Navy's nuclear-powered aircraft carriers.
