) announced that Nimbus Records Nimbus Records is a British record company specializing in classical music recordings. Nimbus was founded in 1972 by the late bass singer Numa Labinsky and the brothers Michael and Gerald Reynolds and has traditionally been based at the Wyastone Leys mansion site, near Monmouth and , the UK specialist classical music label, is releasing a set of surround music DVD-Audio titles featuring DTS surround sound, entitled the "Surroundyourselfwith" series. Presenting highlights from Nimbus' extensive catalogue of Ambisonic recordings, the series will feature titles dating back to the early 1970s. Nimbus used the newly released Pro Series Surround Encoder to create the DTS soundtracks.

A British-invented system, Ambisonic technology records a 360 degree sound field using a "single point" microphone with four capsules that is then "UHJ-encoded" to provide a two-channel stereo signal, so that it is compatible with all standard playback equipment, but can be decoded back to four-channel surround with the appropriate equipment. Nimbus Records has been recording its classical, world music and Prima Voce archive transfer titles in surround sound using Ambisonic for more than 30 years, and released its earliest recordings on vinyl LP before the advent of CD. While Ambisonic replay in the home was not a commercial success, Nimbus Records continued to make recordings with the system, as the company maintained that it produced the most natural recordings in keeping with the principles of true performance.

Recent advances in surround sound and the widespread growth in sales of home theatre systems has enabled Nimbus Records to re-release their Ambisonic recordings on the DVD-A See DVD-Audio.  format, therefore allowing playback as originally intended in four channels.

"DTS' philosophy has always been to provide sound in keeping with an artist's original intent, and therefore fits well with Nimbus' own fundamental belief that their music recordings sound better in surround," said Gerben Van Duyl, Director of Business Development for Consumer Content, DTS Europe. "By releasing the 'Surroundyourselfwith' series with DTS surround sound, many people will hear these recordings for the first time the way they were originally meant to be heard."

"Nimbus chose to encode the recordings in DTS surround sound because it provides superior sound quality and considerable technical compatibility with the original Ambisonic recordings," said Crac Downes, Nimbus Records Head of Recording. "Ambisonics Ambisonics is a series of recording and replay techniques using multichannel mixing technology that can be used live or in the studio. By encoding and decoding sound information on a number of channels, a 2-dimensional ("planar", or horizontal-only) or 3-dimensional  depends very much on the phase coherence between the channels -- you need to get the same out when you decode it as you put in when you encoded it. DTS maintains that essential phase coherence."

Nimbus Records is initially releasing five discs in the "Surroundyourselfwith" series, comprising selected recordings of music by Elgar, Beethoven, Schubert and Rakhmaninov, and an American Classics compilation with works by Sousa, Copland and Barber. Subsequent releases will include internationally renowned flamenco guitar A flamenco guitar is a type of guitar, built for the purpose of playing Flamenco music.

About Nimbus Records

Classical record label Nimbus Records started LP production for their own recordings in 1977 and quickly gained a reputation for making high quality vinyl pressings. When CD was launched, Nimbus built the first CD factory in the UK and expanded rapidly until Nimbus Manufacturing had additional CD plants in Cwmbran and in Charlottesville, Virginia, USA, winning the Queen's Award for Technological Achievement. In 1992, Nimbus sold the manufacturing plants and concentrated instead on the development of CD laser mastering equipment. It was involved in the birth of the DVD format and soon became the market leader, winning the Queen's Award for Export Achievement in 1997. In 2001, the technology company was sold and in 2002 the founders returned their attention to the record label and the management of the Wyastone Concert Hall. They established systems for the efficient manufacture of small runs of Nimbus Records titles, making over 200,000 discs in this way in the first two years. Today many of the over 1,000 titles in the Nimbus back catalogue are available once again, including long-deleted recordings, and Nimbus is offering its "disc-on-demand" technology to other labels around the world. www.wyastone.co.uk
